Position Information Position Title Certified Police Officer Status Full Time Job Summary This position is eligible for $5,000 sign-on bonus Starting pay = 58,000 Retired Certified Police Officers encouraged to apply This is a CONTINUOUS OPEN ANNOUNCEMENT Every member within the Tuskegee University Police Department will strive to provide excellent police services to all students, faculty/staff, visitors, and merchants of the Tuskegee University (TU) community; committing to the concept of inclusion and community engagement when carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities, in a concerted effort to enhance campus safety and security for all who come upon the TU grounds. Officers provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Patrols the university in a mobile unit or by foot patrol to prevent and/or reduce criminal activity, preserve the peace and apprehend offenders; responds to emergency and non-emergency situations; conducts preliminary investigation of crimes and attempted crimes; conduct searches and seizures; locates and preserves evidence and crime scenes; prepares reports; executes arrests when necessary. Patrols the university to prevent property loss due to fire or flooding. Renders aid to accident victims, and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. (50%) Monitors, notes, reports and investigates suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol areas. Communicates with the public to gain their confidence and to enhance crime prevention and law enforcement efforts while conducting building checks and/or vehicle checks for security purposes. (20%) Conducts traffic crash investigations prepares reports and submits finding to supervisor. Photographs or draws diagram(s) or crime or accident scenes and interviews principals and eyewitnesses. Monitors traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures. Patrols University streets for traffic violations; issues uniform citations to traffic violators; controls traffic congestion; monitors and directs traffic and parking activity for events on campus. (5%) Provides assistance to other law enforcement agencies by identifying/locating suspects who may be students or employees of the University; executing warrants/arrests, recovering stolen property, etc. (5%) Maintains proficiency in the daily operation of police software, ensuring that all reports are complete with required documentation, and submitted as required before end of tour of duty. (5%) Inspects and maintain departmental equipment in good working order, i.e., service weapons, vehicles, uniforms, leather gear handcuffs, badges, personal protection equipment, etc. (5%) Keeps abreast of University policies, rules & regulations (to include student codes), current statutes, updates, standard operating procedures and/or departmental general orders to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance in the performance of duties, special tasks and assignments. Seeks and/or creates professional development opportunities that enhance individual as well as agency growth. (5%) Testifies in court, administrative hearings and other criminal proceedings as required by law. (3%) Performs other related duties as required. (2%) Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training) High school diploma or GED Must be 21 years of age or older Must possess certification as an Alabama certified law enforcement officer (APOST) Valid driver’s license with a good driving record Physical Demands While performing the duties of a law enforcement officer (LEO), tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running and climbing. The duties of a LEO may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and/or people, such as in the event of chasing and/or subduing a suspect(s) resisting arrest. Some tasks are performed with the potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noises, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic and animals. Tasks includes working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, golf carts, ATV’s and material handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.
