In-House Counsel
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a unique global network of policy research centers, is seeking an in-house counsel to advise its senior management team and ensure compliance. The incumbent will report to the chief operating officer and also will work closely with Carnegie's president and other members of the executive management group.
A primary function of this role is to be the in-house lead managing the day-to-day matters regarding union-related contract negotiations and implementation. Responsibilities include drafting job descriptions, engaging with external counsel, helping to lead the negotiation process, overseeing the implementation of any agreed-upon contract provisions, and addressing any union grievances. The in-house counsel also will be responsible for ensuring compliance with legal policies across the organization (such as FARA and GDPR), ensuring nonprofit compliance, contract review, advising the executive management group on legal risks, advising on questions related to Carnegie's global centers, developing guidance materials and policies, and other duties as assigned.
The selected candidate will have a law degree and at least 7 years of relevant legal experience. The ideal candidate will have labor-related experience or possess the experience to get up to speed quickly on labor law. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills. It is crucial that this role is able to exercise independent judgment and justify legal recommendations.
Located in Dupont Circle, we offer an outstanding benefits package. This is not a virtual position. Carnegie employees are required to work in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and can work from home Mondays and Fridays.
